ASM Agar Art Winners: Celebrating Creativity in Microbiology

Angelina College Students Shine in National Bacterial Art Competition

For the second year in a row, Angelina College’s microbiology students have showcased their creativity and scientific expertise in the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) Agar Art Contest. Organized by Dr. Paula Nellessen, this year’s competition invited participants to explore the theme “What Brings You Joy” by designing stunning bacterial artwork on petri dishes.

The contest, held each fall with winners announced in December, brought exciting news for Angelina College. Danna Green, a student from Dr. Kathleen McClinton’s lab, earned a spot in the top 15 for her division. Her piece, titled “Little Mug of Joy,” depicted a charming coffee mug created entirely with bacteria, a testament to the unique fusion of art and science.

This marks two consecutive years of success for the college, following last year’s 2nd-place win. “We’re proud to see our students excel in such a creative and competitive field,” said Dr. Nellessen. “It’s a joy to see their hard work and imagination recognized on a national level.”

Congratulations to Danna Green and the microbiology team for continuing this winning streak!
