AC’s New Software Development Program Hosts Ribbon Cutting

As the reach of computer technology continues to expand globally, so does the need for trained, qualified individuals with both the knowledge and creativity to meet the ever-changing demands for new ideas.
Beginning this fall, Angelina College will offer a program specifically designed to launch students into the growing field.
AC now will offer an Associate of Applied Science degree in Software Development, a new program that just this past week launched with a ceremonial ribbon cutting outside AC’s Temple Business building on the campus.
With visiting dignitaries and staff on hand to witness the event, AC president Dr. Michael Simon joined Cristian Turbeville – the new program’s instructor – for the ribbon cutting.
Turbeville explained the program “involves the systematic conception, design, implementation, testing, and maintenance of software.” Activities include “requirements analysis, architecture design, coding, debugging, testing, deployment, and ongoing support.”
Moreover, the course is set up for both the experienced computer “geek” and the novice.
“This class is prepared for any student who wants to learn about programming,” Turbeville said. “It’s a multi-level course covering different levels of programming concepts. We’ll go over different programming languages, basic computer science concepts and theory. The course is really going to prepare someone who wants to go out into the field and either do their own work or join an established team of developers. That includes making software, or specific applications like proprietary applications.”
Such training elevates the student to a completely different level of understanding, Turbeville said.
“With this program, you’re going to be equipped with the ability not only to use a program but also to understand what’s going on in the background. Maybe there’s a program out there you like, but it doesn’t do a specific thing you want. You’ll be able to take that program and maybe add the feature you want. You’ll have that skill set after this course.
“I’ve done some projects. For example, I like drones. I’ve done some UAV programming, so I’ve made my own shell allowing me to communicate with any drone I plug into it, and I can write commands to it.”
Turbeville acknowledged how the rise in popularity in such areas as video games has spawned the desire for gaining the appropriate knowledge.
“One of the programming languages we’ll go over is the framework for game development called C++,” Turbeville said. “Game engines use C++ because it’s low level, and it essentially allows anyone to establish a good foundation for their creativity.
“Someone who’s interested in gaming will find this program is a great starting point. We do have an option in which they can either do an internship or a personal project. If they wanted to do a video game as a personal project for credit, they could.”
As with all Angelina College programs and degree plans, the ultimate goal is to set students up for success in the workforce – from the initial interview all the way to the desired career. Turbeville said the new Software Development program certainly will boost a graduate’s employment opportunities in his or her chosen career.
“They’ll have no problems getting into entry-level programming jobs, like a Level 1 programming job, and then they can work their way up to wherever they’re wanting to go. From what I’ve seen, a lot of employers are looking for experience. Their hiring methods include having prospects come in to perform practice problems, which is exactly the type of thing we’ll be doing here.
“Our students will be able to demonstrate proficiency immediately, which seriously increases their chances of getting hired.”
