Welding Technology

Degree: Associate of Applied Science in Welding Technology 

Certificates:

  • Level 1 Certificate in Welding Technology – Basic

  • Level 1 Certificate in Welding Technology – Intermediate

  • Level 2 Certificate in Advanced Welding Technology

The welding profession is woven into a multitude of businesses which require skilled technicians to work in a variety of industries, including energy, construction, manufacturing and Aerospace. The welding technology program leads to target jobs in deep east Texas and all over the world.

The basic certificate is designed for the beginning welder and introduces students to basic welding using SMAW, GMAW, and FCAW in all positions and standard joint designs, along with cutting using Oxy-Fuel. The basic certificate prepares students for jobs in fields related to manufacturing, production welding and general welding repair services. 

The intermediate certificate is designed for the intermediate welder and requires completion of the Basic Certificate. This certificate introduces students to intermediate welding using SMAW on “V” Groove plate and pipe in all positions and standard joint designs, along with mechanical cutting using Oxy-Fuel. The intermediate certificate prepares students for jobs in fields related to shutdowns, and construction welding. 

The advanced certificate is designed for the advanced welder and requires completion of the Basic and Intermediate Certificates. It introduces students to advanced welding using SMAW and GTAW on “V” Groove pipe in advanced positions and standard joint designs, along with mechanical cutting using Oxy-Fuel and plasma. This certificate will prepare students for jobs in fields related to shutdowns, construction, refineries, aerospace, and exotic material welding. The advanced certificate requires students to be TSI complete prior to graduation.

The associate degree program is designed to provide students with a degree in welding, which, in addition to the certificates, will open other possible job opportunities for graduates.

Prerequisites

  • Prerequisites to enter the program as a Level 1 certificate major include a high school diploma or GED. Entrance testing is not required. 
  • Students who do not have a high school diploma or GED may co-enroll as Level 1 certificate students and GED students through Adult Education and Literacy at Angelina College (936-633-4525). 
  • Students who have a high school diploma or GED may also enter the program as associate degree (AAS) students. TSI entrance scores are required.
