ROADRUNNERS CHRISTEN NEW FIELD It was only a Fall Baseball game, and as such did not warrant much in the way of attention. It didn’t count in any standings, nor would the stats show up in any box score. But Sunday’s baseball game between the Angelina College Roadrunners and Alvin Dolphins carried plenty of significance nonetheless. The game marked the first competitive contest for the Roadrunners on their new field. Following years of anticipation and months of construction, the new field made its sparkling debut despite the fact the game was a reschedule from Saturday. Even local guy John Tatum made sure to christen the new field right, launching the field’s first homer over the left field wall early in the contest. “The guys were really excited about getting to play this first game here, and they worked extra hard to get the field in game shape after all the rain,” AC assistant coach Rich Martinez said afterward. “We’re all really proud of this new facility, and we’re looking forward to every game here.” It didn’t matter that the rains forced a quick end in what would have been the ninth inning. Fans had already begun absorbing the experience: The new, more-open seating and the covered pavilion behind home plate stayed full throughout most of the game. “You don’t typically see that much fan support for a Fall Ball game,” Martinez said. “We had people here way before the game started, and everything I heard about it later was extremely positive.” The Roadrunners will host another Fall Baseball series on Sept. 26th.
