Highlanders 70, Roadrunners 61

On just about any other night, AC men’s head coach Todd Neighbors would have been ecstatic to see his team hold a good-shooting McLennan squad to just 34 points in the first half.

But when the home-team Roadrunners couldn’t find an offensive advantage with their own rims, the Highlanders negated an otherwise good defensive effort, taking the 70-61 win.

The ‘Runners shot just 26 percent from the field in the first half and 34 percent for the game, with just one player hitting double figures. Travis Smith led the team with 12 points, followed by Antonio Holmes with eight.

McLennan’s Tre Nichols led all scorers with 18 points, including a trio of three pointers in six attempts. Zach Williams added 11 for the Highlanders.

Neighbors said his team’s offensive struggles all boil down to having so much inexperience – the team features 12 freshmen on the roster – on the floor at once.

“We just can’t find any rhythm offensively,” Neighbors said. “We’ve got young players, and their hearts are in the right place; but they can’t seem to put together a string of good minutes, and we’re constantly battling from behind because of it.

“We need some guys to step up and take a leadership role, and that’s not easy for a freshman to do.”

The Roadrunners (3-3) will travel to Ranger on Thursday and Richland on Friday. Each of those games is scheduled for a 7:30 tipoff.
