Angelina Roadrunner Association Raises Funds, Increases Memberships with Guy Davis Golf Tournament One hundred golfers of every ability level – from hackers to true duffers – converged on the course at Crown Colony on Monday to show off their skills while raising money for Angelina College athletics by way of the second annual Guy Davis Golf Tournament hosted by the Angelina Roadrunner Association. Divided into 20 five-man teams, the players spent their 18 holes competing in a scramble format, with the team comprised of Ricky Worrell, Kevin Hurley, Kenneth Love, Steve Kolb and Randy Hope winning the tournament with an overall finish of 17 under par (gross). Not only did the tournament create the desired friendly competition, but it also helped the Roadrunner Association boost its membership while generating proceeds for use with every AC sport. In return, each golfer received an All-Sports pass for every game of every sport throughout the Angelina College basketball, baseball and softball seasons. Chad Roberts of the Roadrunner Association said the tournament drew an impressive response from the city. “Along with all our other golfers, we had several City of Lufkin members, along with the mayor (Jack Gorden), involved with this tournament,” Roberts said. “It really shows how much Angelina College means to this community, and how much the community realizes that.” The tournament, combined with the Calcutta held on Saturday and the silent auction items sold, raised several thousand dollars, according to Roberts. Some of the auction items included a Lebron James rookie card; basketballs autographed by NBA star Dwight Howard and the Texas A&M women’s basketball team; and several items autographed by legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus. More importantly, the event offered members an opportunity to meet some of the players for whom they’ll be cheering as the games begin. “Several Roadrunner and Lady Roadrunner athletes were here to help as scorekeepers, so our participants had the opportunity to meet those kids and establish a relationship with them,” Roberts said. “When they come to the games this season, they’ll know each other, and it should make it an even better experience for everyone involved.” Those interested in becoming a member of the Roadrunner Association may contact AC Athletics at 936-633-5282, or visit the Athletics web site at www.angelina.edu to find the Roadrunner Association membership form.
