WORKING PARAMETERS
EMS personnel work year round both indoors and out, in all kinds of weather and conditions. The work includes such physical activities/stress as extensive standing, kneeling, bending and lifting. Emotional and mental stress areas include being involved in calls that are violent in nature , lack of consistent eating/sleeping schedules, exposure to diseases/illnesses, and the making of decisions that involve individual's life and death constantly. Work schedules are rarely 8-5, but often in 24 hours shifts that allow 1-2 days off in between shifts. Other common schedules may involve 12 or 16 hour shifts "on-call" time. Schedules vary by types of employment/ company service.
REQUIRED TRAINING
The Texas Department of State Health Services sets the guidelines for training of all EMS personnel in the State of Texas. Curriculum for this training is adopted from the National Highway and Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) through the Department of Transportation (DOT). Approved training programs must abide by the minimum requirements set by DOT/TDSHS in their curriculum. The Angelina College EMS Program is proud to state that we endeavor to exceed the TDSHS/DOT minimums in classroom and clinical requirements to better prepare our students as future EMS providers.
The breakdown of individual course hour requirements per certification is as follows:
Certification Level |
Requirements |
| ECA |
60 Didactic/lab hours (minimum) |
| EMT - BASIC |
144 Classroom/laboratory hours 80 Clinical hours |
| EMT - Intermediate |
208 Classroom/laboratory hours 160 Clinical hours |
| EMT - Paramedic
(Completion Course) |
496 Classroom hours
512 Clinical hours |
A student MUST be certified at the previous level to qualify for the next level.
Once an individual is certified by the state, his/her certification is in effect for 4 years; however, individuals will be asked to produce a certain number or REQUIRED continuing education (CE) hours or must follow other recertification requirements by the TDSHS. Passing of all criteria as required will grant an individual re-certification for 4 more years.
Licensed Paramedic
An individual seeking licensure will have to posses an Associate Degree in EMS or any higher level degree with their EMT-P in order to qualify for licensure. CE hours for the Licensed Paramedics varies from the certified EMT-P's. The renewal of licenses also varies from recertifications.
EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES
Currently individuals that are Certified at each EMS level can find jobs anywhere in the State of Texas with any licensed provider (ambulance service). EMS personnel are employed for pre-hospital care by private service, public municipalities and hospital EMS. The market of need is based on supply/demand with the larger metropolitan areas usually having a greater demand than supply. Additionally, the turnover rate in the health care field is high. Therefore employment opportunities are usually available.
EMS personnel (especially the Paramedics) have the greatest opportunity for advancement and lateral mobility. Other areas of employment include industrial safety, recreation (such as theme parks), multiple departments within a hospital (such as ER, ICU, lab, etc.), EMS education, EMS management, EMS sales/marketing, the military, and even with governing/allied accreditation agencies.
