Chrystal Vega, head softball coach, begins her inaugural season as AC head softball coach having already made school history, becoming the first head coach of the fledgling softball program. The Denton (Texas) alumnus played at the collegiate level for the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where she was a Mid-Continent First Team All-Conference Designated Hitter in 2000. In 2002, Vega’s individual honors included a selection as a Mid-Continent Second-Team All-Conference Utility player.
Vega’s first coaching opportunity came as a Graduate Assistant at Central Missouri State University, where her 2005 team received the highest GPA (3.86) in the nation for all levels of play. Her program had the second-highest GPA among the nation’s junior colleges.
Vega is the daughter of Amy and Ben Vega of Denton; and Chris and Dan Hochstetler of Sasebo, Japan. Her grandfather, Tom Walker, also lives in Denton. |
Heather Whitcomb, assistant softball coach, is a Topeka, KS native and a graduate of Shawnee HS. She played softball at the collegiate level with the University of Central Missouri from 2003-2007, where she majored in Elementary Education and minored in Health Education. Her individual athletic honors included the 2006 award as the All-MIAA Conference 2nd Baseman; and the Academic Honor Roll from 2004-2007.
Whitcomb’s coaching experience included one hear at Mill Valley High School in Shawnee, where she led her team to the state tournament.

Gary Stallard, Sports Information Director and Marketing & Development Coordinator, is in his third season as SID at Angelina College. Following a career as a U.S. Marine, Stallard completed his bachelor’s degree at Stephen F. Austin University, where he majored in English and Journalism. Over the past eight years, he has worked as a sports writer/columnist/photographer for the Lufkin Daily News, with which he covered AC basketball, among other sports. Stallard has won several awards for writing, including the Golden Hoops Award for basketball writing in 2003, Regional Sports Writer of the Year in 2004, and the Texas Press Association’s first-place award for column writing in 2007.
Stallard also taught English at Lufkin High School for four years before assuming his role at AC. He has two daughters, Jaime’ and Jordan, and lives in Lufkin.
