Angelina College Mentoring Program

“Mentoring at a community college opens students’ eyes to available opportunities, helps students discover strengths within themselves, leads them to resources to help develop necessary skills, guides them to design their own pathways to success, and demonstrates to them how they can realize their potential and achieve their dreams.” – E. Paulus

Mission Statement

The Angelina College Mentoring Program (AMP) strives to empower students to achieve academic success. The program supports students in their academic pursuits and personal growth by creating one-to-one mentoring relationships. AMP assists students with the confidence, belonging, resources, and support they need to persist to complete and achieve their potential.

About AMP

The goal of the AMP is to guide and equip students to overcome challenges throughout the semester to achieve academic and personal success. With support from trained mentors and program staff, students will:

  • Clarify academic goals
  • Develop a plan to accomplish their academic goals
  • Utilize tools to address academic challenges
  • Develop a sense of belonging and community
  • Access appropriate student resources as needed
  • Gain a supportive network of their peers in the program

AMP focuses on four broad-range student support areas:

  • Knowledge of higher education resources
  • Comprehensive understanding of the Community College culture and Campus Inclusion
  • Strategies to persist through graduation and transfer to a university or find employment
  • Time management skills

Knowledge of Higher Education Resources

AMP will provide students with personalized support in accessing higher education resources.

Comprehensive Understanding of Community College Culture and Campus Inclusion:

Through the AMP, students will become better acclimated to college and their classes; program participants will develop a deeper knowledge of the institution to make the most of their academic career and to be included and connected on the campus.

Strategies to Persist through Academic Studies

AMP will work collaboratively with students and their mentors to develop tools that will empower students to maintain good academic standing.

Time Management Skills

AMP will develop the skills necessary to realistically incorporate academic success with non-academic responsibilities.

Program Overview

Mentors, consisting of students and faculty, will assist the Mentees with the necessary guidance and support to successfully navigate their college experience. Each Mentor will be assigned to a Mentee and will be equipped with training and team support. The program will strive to find a balance between setting boundaries and remaining flexible to the individual needs of each Mentee and Mentor pair.
